The Lovable alternative for the design stage.

Lovable builds full-stack web apps from a conversation, backend included, and publishes them. Prototyper covers the part before that: a shared canvas where the team sketches, compares and reviews running React screens built by the agent you choose.

What Lovable does well

Full stack from one prompt

Lovable generates frontend, backend, database and authentication together. Lovable Cloud, built on Supabase, provides storage, auth and functions without separate setup.

Publishing built in

Projects publish to a live URL, with custom domains, so a non-developer can put a working app in front of users.

Two-way GitHub sync

Code syncs both ways with GitHub, and Lovable’s docs also cover GitLab and Bitbucket, so engineers can keep working in their own tools.

Where Prototyper is different

One canvas for the whole idea

Sketches, stickies, screenshots and several running screens share an infinite canvas, so options sit next to each other instead of in separate projects or drafts.

Your agent does the building

Connect Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another MCP client and it writes the workspace files itself, on the plan you already pay for. A built-in agent is there too.

Live multiplayer

Teammates and agents work the same surface at once, with live cursors, so a review is a session in front of the work rather than a thread about it.

Rough before polished

Start with boxes and arrows. Nothing on the canvas has to look finished until the team decides which direction deserves the build.

Which one to pick

Pick Lovable when

  • You need a published app with sign-in and a database
  • You want hosting and a custom domain without setting them up
  • You are bringing existing Figma designs into a build
  • One builder is taking an idea all the way to launch

Pick Prototyper when

  • A team is exploring and reviewing ideas together, live
  • You want sketches, notes and running screens on one canvas
  • You want your own coding agent to do the building
  • The goal is a decision and a reviewed design, not yet a launch

An app builder and a design surface

Lovable is an app builder. You describe the product, it generates the frontend and the backend, and it publishes the result. For a founder who needs a working app with sign-in and data this week, that is a strong offer, and Lovable has built the backend, hosting and governance to back it.

Prototyper is a design surface where the designs happen to run. Its unit is not a project but a canvas: the sketches that started the idea, the notes from the last review, and the running screens an agent built from them, all visible at once. It is aimed at the stage where a team is still deciding what to build.

Who writes the code

Lovable’s own agent writes Lovable projects, and usage draws on workspace credits. Lovable also runs an MCP server, which lets clients such as Claude Code or Cursor create projects, send messages to Lovable, read files and deploy. The building still goes through Lovable.

In Prototyper, an external agent is a full participant. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another MCP client connects to the workspace and works against its files and its canvas directly, with your subscription paying for the model. The built-in agent covers quick edits when you do not want to leave the browser.

What Prototyper does not do

Prototyper does not host apps, does not provide a database or authentication for them, and does not import Figma files. If your goal is a published app with real users and stored data, Lovable covers ground Prototyper does not.

What you get instead is a team surface for the earlier decisions, and a GitHub connection that commits the agent’s work and opens pull requests, so the chosen direction can move into whatever stack and hosting you use.

Using both

A practical split: decide on the Prototyper canvas, build out in Lovable. Sketch the options, let the agent build the ones worth clicking, review them with the team, and keep the sketches next to the screens as the record of the decision.

There is no direct import between the tools. Commit the chosen screens to GitHub from the workspace and use them as the reference, or paste screenshots of them into a Lovable prompt.

Frequently asked questions

Is Prototyper a Lovable replacement?
Not for launching full-stack apps. Lovable provides backend, database, auth and hosting; Prototyper does not. Prototyper is for designing and reviewing product screens together with your own agent.
Can Claude Code work with both?
Yes, differently. Lovable’s MCP server lets Claude Code create projects and send messages to Lovable. Prototyper’s MCP server gives Claude Code the workspace files and canvas so it builds directly.
Do both produce real code?
Yes. Lovable generates editable code and syncs it with GitHub. Prototyper screens are React and TypeScript with Tailwind, and a workspace can commit to a connected GitHub repository.
Can I import Figma designs?
Into Lovable, yes: its docs describe a plugin, an MCP route and .fig upload. Prototyper has no Figma import; you start from a sketch, a screenshot or a description.
Is there a free plan?
Prototyper has a free plan. Lovable bills through workspace credits; check its plans page for current terms.
